For those considering which skills to focus on to gain traction in the job market, freelance marketplace Upwork has recently released its list of the most in-demand skills for 2024.
Here are six sought-after skills, ranging from web development to administrative support, including what each entails and how much professionals are charging for them on the platform.
Data Analytics
Data analysts work with large and complex data sets to derive insights that drive business decisions, says Margaret Lilani, vice president of talent delivery at Upwork. They use tools like Microsoft Excel, Google Spreadsheets, SQL, and Tableau.
“The technology is new and evolving rapidly,” Lilani notes. “Those who can leverage and utilize this technology will be the winners in this field.”
Data analysts on Upwork charge up to $167 per hour.
Full Stack Development
Full stack developers handle both the front and back ends of websites and apps, explains Vicki Salemi, career expert for Monster. They manage the user interface as well as the underlying mechanisms that make it function.
With technology constantly advancing, the demand for full stack development "isn't going away," says Lilani.

Social Media Marketing
Social media marketers promote their clients on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, aiming to build brands, interact with customers, boost sales, and drive website traffic, Salemi says.
Given the prevalence of social media platforms, “social media marketing is here to stay,” according to Lilani.
Social media marketers charge up to $250 per hour.
Accounting
Accountants review financial statements to help businesses and individuals manage operations and file taxes. Companies often “need fast access to experts who can get the job done,” Lilani says, noting that this applies to both Fortune 10 companies and startups.
“We will always need to pay taxes,” Salemi adds, highlighting the longevity of this skill.
Accountants on Upwork charge up to $125 per hour.
General Virtual Assisting
General virtual assistants support clients in various ways, such as managing calendars, handling emails, and improving presentations, Lilani says.
Some specialize in specific software or platforms, but their generalist nature allows them to be flexible, she notes.
These assistants charge up to $65 per hour on Upwork.
**Graphic Design**
Graphic designers create visual concepts that align with their clients' branding, says Salemi. They design logos, infographics, social media posts, presentations, and more.
“We live in a visual society,” Lilani states, “making graphic design all the more critical.”
